This is a Winery Proposal inspired by the Jomon Era’s respect to the land it dwells upon and the French notion of the “terroir” , a wine cultivation that embodies the place’s history, culture, climate and the people.
We propose for the winery to be two storeys, to keep a clear circulation for visitors and wine makers. All wine production related facilities are located on the basement level where the environment is stable and controllable, similar to the Jomon “pit dwellings”. The upper level is for visitors and wine professionals, with visual connection to the production process below. Above the carved out soilscape is a large monumental roof supported by powerful and symbolic columns. The roof eaves are kept low to horizontally cut out the surrounding vineyard landscape.
The low roof eaves of the building seen from the exterior emphasizes horizontality against the vast surrounding landscape. As we enter via the low eaves, another world reveals itself under a large embodying roof. Panoramic views out to vineyards, mountains, the sea and the city unfolds before the visitor’ s eyes in a timeless manner.
